Who Should Read This

Anyone who:

  • Thinks more money/property will finally make them “secure”
  • Enjoys moral gut-punches disguised as simple peasant tales
  • Has ever said “I just need a little more and then I’ll relax”

TLDR;

Leo Tolstoy tells the story of a farmer who believes that if he just had more land, he would finally be satisfied.

He’s offered a deal:
He can claim all the land he can walk around in one day, as long as he returns to the starting point before sunset.

Greedy for more, he keeps expanding the area he claims and pushes himself farther and farther.

By the end of the day he must run back to the starting point to avoid losing everything. He makes it—but collapses and dies from exhaustion.

He is buried.

The land he ultimately needs:

Six feet of earth for his grave.

Lesson:
The endless pursuit of “more” can destroy the life it was meant to improve.
